Dr Oliver Florica
MD FRACS
Dr Florica earned his MD in 1990 from Carol Davila Medical University in Bucharest. He interned in Johannesburg, then furthered his experience at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town and Witwatersrand University in Johannesburg. In South Africa he trained in a variety of surgical specialties mainly related to trauma: general surgery, orthopaedics, plastic and reconstructive surgery, thoracic, cardiovascular and neurosurgical emergencies, intensive care and life-support techniques.
Dr Florica moved to Australia to continue training in general Surgery in 1995. He qualified from the Royal Melbourne Hospital as a Specialist and earned his FRACS in 2002. Since then laparoscopic surgery ("keyhole") has become the focus of Dr Florica's practice. His experience of over 2000 laparoscopic surgeries regularly includes: gallbladder, hernia, bowel and anti-reflux procedures and his laparoscopic skills are such that he has been able to perform successfully laparoscopic surgery for gallbladder and appendix without need for open surgery or technical complications for the last seven years.
Dr Florica's main surgical interest is laparoscopic gastric banding as a weight loss solution, a surgical procedure with almost 20years proven records that in good hands presents as one of the safest, reversible and efficient surgical solutions for morbidly obese patient.
Since 2003 Dr Florica has completed courses and has been mentored in a range of bariatric procedures in Australia and overseas. In 2008 Dr Florica has earned a Diploma in laparoscopic surgery from The University of Strasbourg in France.
Dr Florica has been practicing privately in North Sydney and patients are seen for surgery at The Sydney Adventist Hospital or endoscopy (panendoscopy, colonoscopy) at Castle Hill Day Surgery.
Research interest
Dr Florica has contributed research papers, publications, lectures and other presentation on laparoscopic surgery and gastric banding at different levels of professional meetings (highlights: SAGES in Dallas, IASGO in Bucharest, IFSO in Sydney, International Laparoscopic Colorectal Conference in Florida).
Dr Florica's current interest is in techniques of establishing pneumoperitoneum where over a 1000 cases are reviewed and hernia repair technique using optical trocars.
